Omeka Sites

Note that the following examples are in a version of Omeka different from that one demonstrated and provided by the Publishing Without Walls project. However, most of the features and upgrades (called plug-ins in Omeka and "modules" in the version offered by PWW, Omeka-S) are available in both versions of Omeka with some added benefits in Omeka-S.

Baltimore Uprising

Maryland Historical Society

Description: An example of Omeka's value in quickly developing digital archives commemorating quickly evolving social justice activism. Baltimore Uprising "seeks to preserve and make accessible original content that was captured and created by individual community members, grassroots organizations, and witnesses to the protests that followed the death of Freddie Gray on April 19, 2015."

Technology:Built with an "out-of-the-box" Omeka installation with plug-ins that facilitate community contributions, commenting, and an item carousel.

Black Liberation 1969 Archive

Dr. Allison Dorsey, Nabil Kashyap and several other staff, students, and research assistants

Description: "The Black Liberation 1969 Archive chronicles [black student protest] history by finally bringing forward the experiences of the black students who organized and executed a series of nonviolent direct actions and negotiations at Swarthmore College. In honor of the College's sesquicentennial, this archive challenges visitors to reconsider the stories that have previously constituted the official narrative and to engage with the black experience of Swarthmore in this critical period."

Technology: Involves an "out-of-the-box" Omeka installation with several upgrades, including the Neatline timeline and mapping plug-in for the interactive exhibit, 1969 Mapping the Sit-in.

Colored Conventions

Dr. Gabrielle Foreman, Dr. Jim Casey, Dr. Sarah Lynn Patterson, co-founders

Description: "A collaborative digital humanities project" out of the University of Delaware "that brings nineteenth-century Black organizing to digital life."

Technology: Largely Omeka "out-of-the-box"

Educating Harlem

Dr. Ansley T. Erickson and Dr. Ernest Morrell, project co-directors

Description: This project is an excellent example of Omeka's potential as a highly interactive teaching tool, resulting from education and history graduate student projects. It has since grown from its initial conception to include material from Harlem "community members, organizations, technologists, and archivists."

Goin' North

Undergraduate students at West Chester University, taught by Professor Janneken Smucker

Description: Like Education Harlem, this project is the result of student projects. "Drawing on oral history interviews to build a digital archive and tell digital stories about the Great Migration to Philadelphia."

Technology: Largely Omeka "out-of-the-box"

An Archive for Virtual Harlem

Jessica Johnston

Description: "The project is one of the earliest virtual reality environments created for use in the humanities and especially for the use in an African American literature course." ... "The Virtual Harlem digital environment contains iconic locations like the Cotton Club, the Apollo Theater, The Marshall Hotel, museums, art galleries and the Harlem Branch Library. In addition to these famous locations, there are also interactive elements, collaborative possibilities, music of the period and opportunities for students to create projects related to the period and to role play." From the site's main page.

Technology: Scalar 1 installation, rich with both embedded and linked media: audio, images, and video. May be used as a course focused on Harlem.

Black Quotidian

Description: "a digital project designed to highlight everyday moments and lives in African-American history. This site features historical articles from black newspapers such as the Atlanta Daily World, Baltimore Afro-American, Chicago Defender, and Philadelphia Tribune."

Technology: created from a basic Scalar installation, linking to hosted media in the form of images and PDF text documents

Freedom's Ring

Stanford University

Description: annotated exhibit featuring an interactive video and audio of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s I Have a Dream speech provided digital artifacts relevant to his speech and this moment in US Civil Rights history

Technology: highly customized installation of Scalar leveraging nonlinear tag-oriented structure


Dr. Kenton Rambsy

Description: AFRO PWW's inaugural publication. Dr. Rambsy uses data mining to explore Jay Z's discography, figuring him alongside writers and cultural critics important to African American history and culture

Technology: uses a fairly standard Scalar installation with charts created with Tableau embedded with Iframes, YouTube and Facebook video imports

FemTechNet Critical Race and Ethnic Studies Pedagogy Workbook

Many Contributors with the The Situated Critical Race + Media Committee (SCR+M)

Description: "this workbook is an ongoing project to build resources for faculty members who are often overburdened at their home institutions, but are willing to take on the difficult task of teaching about gender and racial inequity in our information culture. This workbook also considers the ways that FemTechNet can interface with other allies and partners in ethnic studies and communities of color."

Technology: created from a basic Scalar installation and features links to and embeds of syllabi from courses in PDF form, maps, SoundCloud audio, and Vimeo video

The Knotted Line

Evan Bissell

Description: "The Knotted Line takes its name from a set of over 40 paintings by artist and project director Evan Bissell which are connected by a thin, interactive line to tell the intertwining stories of labor, education and incarceration in the geographic area of United States from 1495-2025."

Technology: "The primary experience of the piece is a Flash-based interface which enables users to rip the line open to reveal the paintings and related historical annotations. These historical details are delivered by Scalar via its open API, and each links to a page within Scalar that more fully explores its topic, with generous amounts of embedded media."

Unghosting Apparitional Histories: Erasures of Black Lesbian Feminism

Description: "In Unghosting Apparitional (Lesbian) Histories I explore the internet in search of one woman, the sort of person who doesn't have papers in a named collection, but who appears scattered throughout resources that also are seldom in one physical location. The internet offers the tantalizing promise of rendering these physical and geographical restrictions moot, but how much of that promise is fulfilled?"

PressBooks' Examples

Description: PressBook's curated list of sample projects, including full access in several different formats to PressBooks in the public domain and screenshots from others. Observe PressBook's handling of images, including those that take up the full page width. Moreover, PressBooks is an ideal format for graphic novels.

eCampus Ontario

Description: "A dedicated Pressbooks instance for universities throughout Ontario, Canada, to create, remix and disseminate OER including Open Textbooks" --PressBooks website. See especially examples of humanities textbooks such as their Open Anthology of American Literature.

Open Journals

International Journal of African & African American Studies

Anthony Denkyirah and Adetola Oke, editors

Description: Based out of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, the "International Journal of African and African American Studies (IJAAAS) is a quarterly multidisciplinary on-line, refereed journal. Its goal is to bring scholarly discourses within easy reach of a global audience regarding the African Diaspora."

Technology: An early version of OJS. There are HTML abstracts and links to PDFs of the full text of the articles. It does not appear to be a multimedia journal, The PDFs contained text-only.

HAU Journal of Ethnographic Theory

Giovanni da Col, Ed.

Description: Though not devoted exclusively to African American Studies, this journal features many articles pertaining to the field and illustrates a powerful mode of disseminating interdisciplinary research like in Black Studies. According to the site, "Journal of Ethnographic Theory, is an international peer-reviewed, open-access journal which aims to situate ethnography as the prime heuristic of anthropology, and return it to the forefront of conceptual developments in the discipline."

Technology: Recent version of OJS. There are multiple formats available for each article, including HMTL text in the site as well as downloadable PDF and E-Reader friendly versions.

Other Platforms

The Serengeti Lion

National Geographic Magazine

Description: Site may be viewed for a time for free but requires a subscription for longterm access. The site features resulting video, images, and narrative from a videography expedition to the Serengeti focusing on lions and their environment.

Technology: Site created from the ground-up by National Geographic web developers. This structure and design may be emulated in the PWW Project tool, Scalar.
